The Pinewood Derby Chairman is responsible for providing a fun derby race for both scouts and the families. All of the duties for the Pinewood Derby Chairman can be delegated to an appropriate derby committee member.
The Pinewood Derby Chair's main responsibilities are:
- Schedule the dates for both a parent and scout pinewood derby race with the pack committee.
- Check with the council for the current pinewood derby rules and apply the same rules to pack races.
- Order enough pinewood derby kits in November from the council prior to the December pack meeting.
- Wrap all kits prior to the December pack meeting to be given out as presents.
- Make sure the pack web site has the current rules posted online.
- Schedule a pinewood derby workshop day on a Saturday to help scouts and families cut and build the cars.
- Encourage parents, siblingsv and leaders to participate in the 'Parent' race Saturday Morning after the Scouts.
- Coordinate purchase of enough pinewood derby patches to give out to the scouts for the Saturday race with the Advancement Coordinator.
- Coordinate the purchase of 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall trophies for the final pack race with the Advancement Coordinator.
- Purchase eight smaller trophies for the following: Best Paint Job, Most Original Design, Best Workmanship, Most Unusual, Funniest, Best Fuel Economy (slow poke!), Most Aerodynamic, Best Of Show (optional)
- Find parents to help purchase and sell food at the concession stand for Saturday morning. (optional)
- Assign volunteers to help run the race which includes two people for the inspection, one to retrieve cars at end of each race, one to operate the racing software, announcer and release cars for each race.
- Assign volunteers for setting up the track and decorating the room prior to race.
- Load software on a laptop ahead of time and enter scouts to race. (The race format will be double elimination.)
- Assign a volunteer for the pit stop to be used prior to the race. Be sure the proper tools and extra weights and wheels are available on race day. (optional)
- Setup a corner in the room for smaller kids to draw and stay busy.
- Coordinate with the council when the district and council races are. Provide this information to the top winner of the Pack.
- Assign substitute to race in the district race if a winning scout cannot go to the race.
- Have a pack photo taken of all scouts and provide this picture to our Cubmaster.
- Provide the names of the winning scouts in each den to the council for the district race.
- Arrange for storage of the pinewood derby track with our Chartered Organization Representative.
